Messi and Inter Miami Loses Leagues Cup Final to Seattle Sounders

The Seattle Sounders defeated Lionel Messi and club side, Inter Miami 3-0 in the Leagues Cup final at a sold-out Lumen Field on Sunday night, adding another piece of silverware to their overflowing trophy case.

The victory, sealed with goals from Osaze De Rosario, Alex Roldan, and Paul Rothrock, makes Seattle the only MLS club to win all five major trophies available to league teams.

Sounders lifted the trophy with 3-0 statement win, completing sweep of every major MLS title.

Seattle Outlasts Messi and Inter Miami

The Sounders put on a complete performance in front of a roaring home crowd, facing off against defending Leagues Cup champions Inter Miami, who was led by global superstar Lionel Messi.

Seattle struck first in the 26th minute when Osaze De Rosario powered home Alex Roldan’s perfectly delivered cross, sending the Lumen Field faithful into early celebrations.

Miami responded with relentless pressure after halftime, and Messi came inches from equalizing in the 50th minute but uncharacteristically sent his shot over the bar from close range.

Soon after, Tadeo Allende missed another golden opportunity, firing wide with only Seattle goalkeeper Andy Thomas to beat.

Seattle regained momentum as the game progressed and capitalized in the 84th minute when Roldan confidently buried a penalty to double the lead.

Then, academy product Paul Rothrock provided the perfect ending, scoring in stoppage time to make it 3-0 and ignite a deafening celebration in Seattle.

Sounders head coach, Brian Schmetzer has now led the club to MLS Cup (2x), the Concacaf Champions League, and now the Leagues Cup.
