Major Blow! Osimhen Ruled Out of South Africa Clash… Team Doctor Confirms Extent of Injury

Victor Osimhen picked up an injury in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers clash against Rwanda.

The striker was substituted in the 35th minute after suffering what appeared to be a serious knock.

Osimhen’s setback left fans speculating if he would be fit to face South Africa.

Speaking after the match, head coach Eric Chelle admitted uncertainty over Osimhen’s condition.

“I can’t say much about Victor for now. He has pain in his ankle, and we will see how he feels tomorrow (today). I also need to consult the doctors before we know if he can make the trip,” he said.

However, following an assessment the team doctors have confirmed that Osimhen’s injury is a bruise on his shin.

“He woke up with discomfort and will not be traveling with the squad to South Africa for Tuesday’s game,” the team’s media statement issued on Sunday read.

Osimhen’s absence is a major blow for Nigeria. The forward has featured in only three of Nigeria’s seven World Cup qualifying matches so far, scoring three goals.

Two of those games ended in victories, which remain the Super Eagles’ only wins in Group C.

His presence often brings momentum to the team and unsettles defenders. He will now return to Istanbul for further checks.

The striker has struggled with injuries throughout his career, predominantly muscle-related.

His longest spell on the sidelines came in the 2023/2024 season when a hamstring injury kept him out for nine matches.

In total, Osimhen has missed over 94 games in his professional career due to injury.

With Osimhen ruled out, Chelle faces a tough task of finding solutions in attack.

One possible approach is deploying a two-striker system, similar to the second half against Rwanda.

In that game, Tolu Arokodare led the line while Cyriel Dessers operated just behind, pressing high and creating space for Arokodare.

The system if deployed efficiently against South Africa is likely to work against a defence anchored by Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Thabo Moloisane.

Nigeria currently sit third in Group C with 10 points, level with leaders South Africa.

The last two encounters between both sides ended in draws during regulation time—an outcome the Super Eagles cannot afford, especially with the group nearing its climax and only three games left.

For Chelle’s men, victory in Bloemfontein is essential.
