Ademola Lookman’s arrival at Atletico Madrid may be exactly what Antoine Griezmann needs to rediscover his best form, as the duo combined impressively in Atletico’s 5–0 Copa del Rey victory over Real Betis.
Griezmann entered the match from the bench in the 50th minute and made an immediate impact.
Just 12 minutes later, Lookman provided the assist for the French forward’s goal.
Lookman found himself in space on the left side after receiving the ball, drew two players towards him, then spotted Griezmann unmarked before laying the ball into his path.
Griezmann calmly fired the ball into the back of the net, scoring his first goal since the 13th of January.
After the match, Griezmann spoke highly of Lookman and the atmosphere within the club.
He said, “Regarding Lookman, the idea is to enjoy the new players and let them give us nights of joy like this one.” He added, “We are a team, a dressing room, a club, and a fanbase that makes things easy.”
Griezmann also emphasized the club’s unity, saying, “From the first second, every new player is welcomed with open arms, and you can see that with the new signings.”
Head coach Diego Simeone also praised Lookman’s qualities and versatility.
He said, “Lookman is different from all the players we have, especially in one on one situations, but he also has associative play.” Simeone continued, “His profile allows us to use him in different positions, and his impact on the team was very good.”
