Former Nigerian international, Solomon Kwambe, has criticized Nigeria’s performance in their 1-0 loss to Senegal at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Kwambe admitted he wasn’t surprised by the result, pointing out that the CHAN Eagles side held the ball without making any meaningful impact in the final third.
“The performance wasn’t up to expectation. Before and during the game, I noticed we were playing more possession football rather than being purposeful. Senegal made more attempts, and eventually won,” he said.
Despite the defeat, Kwambe defended Eric Chelle, insisting the players carried out his game plan.
“The coach gave his instructions, and I believe the players followed them. The fact that we didn’t win doesn’t mean the coach has been ineffective. He’s doing his best, and I believe 100% that it’s what the coach asked.”
Nigeria will be back in action when they face Sudan in their second Group D fixture at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Tuesday.
Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM Nigerian time.
