Super Falcons forward, Rinsola Babajide has described her first goal for Nigeria as a moment of “big relief” after helping the team to a 3-0 win over Tunisia in their opening match of the 2024 WAFCON.
Babajide, who also provided an assist for Asisat Oshoala’s opener, made a memorable tournament debut on Sunday night at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca. Her first-half stoppage-time goal doubled Nigeria’s lead and put her on the scoresheet for the first time in national colours.
“A Big Relief… I Was Always Missing That First Goal” – Babajide Rinsola on Debut Goal
Speaking after the match, the Tenerife winger shared her joy at finally scoring for the nine-time African champions and contributing meaningfully to the team’s strong start in the competition.
“No, it’s a big relief more than anything. I’ve had a few appearances, a few assists, but I was always missing that first goal.
“So I’m so happy to get that out of the way finally, and also to contribute towards a win as well in such a big tournament.”
Babajide on Fire, Dedicates Goal to Diogo Jota
After several half-chances, Babajide capped a strong first half by scoring in added time. She raced past Chaima Alabbassi and fired past Jabrani for Nigeria’s second against Tunisia.
“It was for Diogo Jota and his brother as well. That was one of his biggest celebrations. We call it the signature celebration.”
“I just wanted to do something for him, he was one of my best players at the club when I was there.”
“We Want the Trophy… It’s a New One” – Babajide Reveals the Super Falcons’ Goal
Babajide didn’t shy away from Nigeria’s main goal — lifting the newly unveiled WAFCON trophy — a redesigned symbol of excellence and unity launched just days before kickoff.
“To win it, we want the trophy, it’s a new trophy, we really want it.”
“Game by Game… Score as Many Goals as Possible”
Despite the strong opening, Babajide insists the team desires to improve steadily as the tournament progresses.
“But yeah, game by game, just to have a better performance each game. And yeah, score as many goals as possible, that we can do.”
Babajide will hope to continue her momentum when the Super Falcons face Botswana in their second Group B clash on Thursday, July 10.
Victory would all but confirm Nigeria’s place in the knockout stages as they pursue a record 10th WAFCON title.
