Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting she is stepping away from international football, insisting she is “still here, still playing, and still doing her job.”
The six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year and Nigeria’s star striker sets the record straight after clinching fourth WAFCON title, following Nigeria’s Remontada 3-2 comeback victory over Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Abidjan.
Despite playing fewer minutes in the tournament, the Bay FC player reiterated her commitment to the national team and cleared that she remains ready to honour any future call-ups.
“To be honest with you, I’m always ready. I always tell my girls, like, stay ready anytime. You can get called on. And when you get called on, go out there and show yourself,” Oshoala said.
Speaking directly to the speculation, she added:
“I don’t know where that came from. Agenda, I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here, I’m still playing, I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on.”
Reflecting on Nigeria’s emotional run at the tournament, Asisat Oshoala offered a word of encouragement to fans and young players alike:
“I would say, don’t give up, keep fighting until the end. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, if you believe. Only if you believe.”
With her statement, the 29-year-old striker reaffirmed her status as one of the pillars of Nigeria’s women’s football, sending a strong message to both critics and supporters that she’s not done yet.
Oshoala is expected to return to club duties in Europe but remains a key figure as Nigeria begins preparations for the 2026 WAFCON qualifiers and the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
