Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface has revealed why a move to the Premier League has never topped his wishlist, despite interest from English clubs in the past.
In a recent interview, Boniface, 24, explained that his preference has always been for teams that match his footballing identity rather than prestige alone.
“I don’t really like the Premier League… Not like I wouldn’t go if the opportunity came, but it has to be a team that suits my style,” Boniface said.
The Nigerian international played a pivotal role in Xabi Alonso’s historic Bundesliga-winning Leverkusen side and credited his decision to join the German champions to their football philosophy.
“Every team I’ve played for since I turned pro has finished first or second. I always check the style of play, and whether there’s too much pressure. Some players can’t play under pressure,” he added.
Boniface, who previously starred for Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium, revealed that he had multiple offers from English clubs before signing for Leverkusen.
“After Belgium, I had good talks from England. Good morning, good everything,” he joked.
“But I didn’t want to go to those teams because of their style. I’m a player that thrives in a possession-based system. If you give me that, I’ll give you everything.”
Victor Boniface was named in Bayer Leverkusen’s pre-season squad on Monday for their trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He is expected to play a key role under new head coach Erik ten Hag ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
