Flying Eagles Arrive in Ghana for WAFU B U20 Tournament

The Flying Eagles have arrived in Accra ahead of the 2025 WAFU B U20 Championship.

The tournament, which kicks off on July 10, will serve as a vital preparatory ground for the team ahead of the FIFA U20 World Cup, slated for September in Chile.

The Flying Eagles, led by head coach Aliyu Zubairu, have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Ghana and Benin Republic.

They will open their campaign against the Black Satellites on Wednesday at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Accra.

Speaking before the team’s departure, Coach Zubairu expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness.

“The tournament in Ghana offers us a good window to showcase a few more players, and we will grab that opportunity. We intend to use the matches as preparation for the FIFA U20 World Cup finals in Chile,” he said.

Nigeria are seven time African U20 champions and have finished as runners up at the FIFA U20 World Cup on two occasions (1989 and 2005).

The Flying Eagles head into the tournament as defending champions, having won back to back WAFU B U20 titles, defeating Benin Republic 3–1 in the 2022 final in Niamey and overcoming Ghana 2–1 in the 2024 final in Lomé.
