Nigeria long jump star Ese Brume has refuted reports that she received $30,000 from the National Sports Commission (NSC) following her car accident late last year.
The crash occurred in November 2024 when another vehicle rammed into her car from behind, causing it to spin and slam into a sidewalk before nearly plunging off a bridge.
Brume, who was returning from the airport with a British friend, sustained a sprained ankle and a strained neck.
Although she initially appeared unhurt, complications emerged days later, forcing her into a period of recovery between November and March.

She resumed light training afterward but required ongoing treatment to rebuild her fitness.
Despite not being at full fitness, Brume chose to compete at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, describing her participation as part of overcoming the trauma and regaining confidence.
In the aftermath of the accident, confusion arose over financial support. A post credited to Tope Ashaolu claimed the NSC had given Brume $30,000 in special assistance.

Brume denied the report on Instagram, writing:
“Just to be clear, NSC did not give me any $30,000. Please get your facts straight. Thanks.”
The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, confirmed the release of funds on compassionate grounds to help her return to training.
Brume had kept details of her accident private at the time, which limited media coverage.
Despite missing several competitions in 2025, she remains Africa’s top-ranked female long jumper and is currently ranked eighth in the world, according to World Athletics.
