Chibuike Nwaiwu Reflects on Super Eagles Debut in Win Over Iran

CB Chibuike Nwaiwu has reflected on his debut for Nigeria in the 2–1 international friendly victory over Iran.

“It’s a privilege for me to represent my country; I am very happy to here and to make my debut. It is surely every footballers dream to represent their country.

“I believe in God, I believe hard work pays off and right from the time I played in the NPFL I always said I would wear the national team shirt and play for the Super Eagles.

“So, when I got the call up while at my club I was so happy.

“I am happy to be with the lads and also to wear the Super Eagles shirt, I was very excited about joining the group and because of the excitement I nearly missed my flight, when my club posted it, it was a great moment for me.”

A dream come true

Chibuike Nwaiwu described the team’s performance against Iran as a disciplined display.

The defender was introduced in the 58th minute, replacing Igoh Ogbu, and quickly settled into Nigeria’s defensive structure.

Operating in a compact back four line, he showed strong positional awareness, won key aerial and ground duels, and progressed possession effectively from the back attributes central to Eric Chelle’s preference for proactive, ball-playing centre backs.

“Iran is a very good side; they qualify for the World Cup regularly. But we took our chances against them which is good.”

The 22 year-old’s ability to step into midfield spaces and break opposition lines with forward passes added balance to Nigeria’s build-up, and he will be pushing for a starting role when the Super Eagles face Jordan on March 31.
