Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has dismissed concerns over perceived bias in his CHAN team selection.
He insisted that every player invited aligns with his footballing philosophy and the demands of international competition.
Reacting to claims of favoritism towards players from a particular club side, Chelle pointed out that the core of his squad being drawn from league champions Remo Stars is a case of merit rather than sentiment.
He referenced South Africa’s national team, which had eight players from one club during the last Africa Cup of Nations.
“This is not about favoritism. My assistant coach being from Remo Stars has nothing to do with this,” Chelle explained.
“I have a clear game model — possession-based football, high pressing without the ball. I need players who understand and can execute that.”
He admitted that while other players in the league also deserved a look-in, only those who fit into his tactical approach could make the final cut.
“There are many good players, but I must choose based on my project. It’s my responsibility to create something with players that suit my system. Maybe one or two others deserve a spot, but this is the reality.”
Chelle also highlighted the challenges posed by the absence of key players like Papa Daniel and Waliu due to transfers and other issues.
“This is a new team. We’re building again,” he concluded.
The team’s pre-match press conference is scheduled for 13:30 (local time) on Monday, followed by their final training session at 18:30 (local time) as preparations continue for their CHAN opener against Senegal.
