Chelle blames Nigeria’s Early CHAN exit on mistakes

Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has attributed the Super Eagles’ early exit from the African Nations Championship to costly errors.

Speaking in the post-match press conference, he explained that the team’s lackluster display was partly due to the loss of key players before the tournament.

“We enjoyed the first twenty minutes, we played our football, and we scored a goal. After that, we made a lot of mistakes and conceded the equaliser in the second half. We gave away four goals from mistakes.

“This is the reality — it hurts because it’s our fault. The group that came for the CHAN (African Nations Championship) is not the same one that qualified.

“Some players left camp after securing moves outside the league, so the team wasn’t as we had imagined.

“For me, the reality is that the best players in the league took part in this tournament, but we can’t approach games in that manner.”

“We made too many errors in these two matches — the opener against Senegal and this one against Sudan.

“In the first two games, the goals we conceded came from mistakes, and we later gave away two more goals in the same fashion. At this level, it’s costly to make such errors; we need to be more focused.”
