Calvin Bassey Pulls Out of Iran, Jordan Friendlies

The Super Eagles have been dealt a significant setback following an injury to Calvin Bassey during training earlier today.

The defender was forced to withdraw from the session after sustaining a back injury, with the full extent of the issue yet to be determined.

Bassey is expected to return to Fulham FC for further medical evaluation, raising concerns for both club and country at a crucial stage of the season.

Major Blow for Nigeria

The injury comes as a big setback for Nigeria, with Bassey regarded as a key figure in the team’s defensive setup.

His leadership and composure at the back have made him an integral part of the squad, and head coach Eric Chelle would have relied on him to organize the defensive line against Iran.

Bassey featured prominently during the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, playing six matches as Nigeria secured a third-place finish. He missed the final game due to suspension, the only match he did not feature in throughout the tournament.

The situation is an even greater concern for Fulham FC and manager Marco Silva.

Bassey has been a vital part of Fulham’s campaign this season, making 23 appearances and starting 21 matches in the Premier League.

His absence earlier in the season was largely due to international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

With eight league games remaining, Fulham currently sit ninth and are pushing for a European qualification spot.

Bassey’s defensive partnership with Joachim Andersen has been crucial to Fulham’s stability at the back.

Any extended absence could significantly impact their ambitions in the closing stages of the season.

Strong Injury Record Prior to Setback

According to Transfermarkt, Bassey has enjoyed a relatively injury-free career.

His only recent absence came during the 2023/2024 season due to illness, which ruled him out of a single match.

Earlier in his career at Rangers FC, he missed two games during the 2020/2021 season due to quarantine protocols amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
