CAF Splashes Cash on Champions League and Confederation Cup

President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe has announced a major increase in prize money for Africa’s top club competitions.
According to Motsepe, the winner of the CAF Champions League will now receive 6 million dollars, representing a fifty percent increase.

The winner of the CAF Confederation Cup will earn 4 million dollars, which is a one hundred percent increase from the previous amount.

The new financial structure means the total prize money and solidarity payments distributed to African clubs will exceed 42 million dollars per season.

Nigeria continues to have four slots in continental competitions but recent performances from the country’s clubs have been disappointing.

In the last campaign, only Rivers United reached the group stage of the CAF Champions League.

The Port Harcourt based club finished bottom of their group after failing to record a single win. Despite their struggles on the pitch, reports indicate that Rivers United earned 800,000 dollars for their participation in the group stage.

For the 2026 2027 CAF competitions, Nigeria will still maintain four continental slots.

Rivers United and Rangers International F.C. currently occupy the qualification places for the CAF Champions League through their positions in the Nigeria Premier Football League.

The race for the CAF Confederation Cup slots remains open as Nasarawa United, Abia Warriors and Ikorodu City F.C. continue to battle for a place.

One of the tickets will go to the team that finishes in the designated league position while the other will be awarded to the winner of the Nigerian FA Cup.
