Atletico Madrid is interested in Nigeria international Ademola Lookman.
According to reports from Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo and Spanish journalist Javi Gomara, Atletico’s interest in Lookman is serious.
The board believes the current African Player of the Year has a profile that suits Diego Simeone’s style of play.
The club sees Lookman’s creativity and flair as top-notch, highlighting his ability to take on defenders — something the team has lacked in recent times.
The Spanish side hopes Atalanta can reduce their asking price of €50–€60 million to make the move possible.
However, that is unlikely, as Lookman is considered a vital part of Atalanta’s project.
Last season he was linked with a move to Paris Saint Germain, Arsenal and Manchester United but he stayed after former head coach Gian Piero Gasperini pleaded with him.
The 27 year old became the first Atalanta player to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or and win the CAF men’s player of the year award.
Lookman is under contract with Atalanta until 2027 and has reportedly informed the club of his desire to move on.
He scored 20 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions last season, helping Atalanta secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
He also played a key role in the club’s historic European success, netting a hat trick in the 2023/2024 UEFA Europa League final — Atalanta’s first European trophy.
Lookman is a versatile player who can operate as a winger or second striker, although he is most effective on the left wing. He joined Atalanta in 2022 from German club RB Leipzig for a fee of €15 million.
