Nigeria needs to recall experienced veterans for the WAFCON if the team must stand any chance of winning the tournament, according to former Super Falcons forward Desire Oparanozie.
Oparanozie, who called time on her international career in 2023 won four WAFCON titles, does not believe the current Super Falcons stand a chance against the strongest teams on the continent.
The Super Falcons is bidding to win a 10th title and will kick off their campaign in the group phase against Algeria, Tunisia and Botswana.
Under Justin Madugu, the Super Falcons have seen in an influx of young exciting talents led by a few senior players.
Madugu oversaw the team’s qualification for the WAFCON as well as the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
He he also guided them to a double-header win over Algeria, but lost to France in international friendly matches played last year.
This June, Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-0 in a friendly, and were without the likes of Asisat Oshoala, Ashleigh Plumptre and a host of other established players.

But, Oparanozie insists the Super Falcons coach will revert to status quo for the WAFCON proper.
‘I don’t think that some of the new players will make the team; they’re not experienced for a tournament of this caliber, it will be disastrous’ Oparanozie remarked.
‘Eventually, they’ll have to go with our regular squad.’
