A 68-year-old woman died after collapsing upon learning that her nephew had been fatally shot, allegedly by a police officer in Limpopo, South Africa.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the 48-year-old officer, stationed at Witpoort SAPS, reportedly shot the victim during a heated argument at Botsalanong village. The man was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
“Following this shocking incident, reports suggest that after the man was rushed to hospital, his aunt learned about the incident, she went to the scene and upon arrival collapsed. Emergency medical personnel were summoned but unfortunately declared her dead at the scene,” Ledwaba said.
Investigators are looking into what sparked the confrontation between the police sergeant and the victim. Initial reports indicate the man had gone to the officer’s house looking for him but did not find him; he returned home only after a call from his wife.
The officer has surrendered to police, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating the case. Authorities have opened both murder and inquest cases.
