A devastating windstorm has struck Garba-Chede, a town in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State, claiming at least six lives and injuring 30 others. The storm, which residents described as one of the most destructive in recent years, left widespread destruction in its wake, including damage to homes, schools, religious centres, and shops.
Abubakar Dodo, a resident whose home was destroyed, recounted the scale of the disaster, noting that properties and foodstuffs worth millions of naira were lost. “It was very devastating,” he told Daily Trust, adding that the windstorm spared few structures in the community.
The traditional ruler of Garba-Chede, Chief Kaigama Maigandi, has appealed to Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas to urgently assist the victims. He called for government support to help residents rebuild their homes and restore their livelihoods.
In response to the disaster, a delegation from the North East Development Commission (NEDC) visited the affected community to assess the damage and identify potential areas for intervention. The team, led by Dr. Balutu Isa Mohammed, expressed sympathy with the victims and pledged the commission’s readiness to provide critical relief and support.
The NEDC delegation also paid a courtesy visit to Chief Maigandi, briefing him on their mission and reaffirming the commission’s commitment to aiding the recovery process.
