The 15 victims in the massacre at a Hanukkah event on Sydney’s Bondi Beach in Australia range in age from 10 to 87, says Chris Minns, the premier of New South Wales.
Speaking at a press conference, Minns says that 42 people remain in hospitals following the sho0ting. Two of them are wounded police officers.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking after Minns, calls the attack an “act of pure evil, an act of antisemitism, an act of terrorism on our shores.”
The sho0ting “deliberately targeted at the Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah,” he says, calling it “a dark day in our nation’s history.”
Naveed Akram, 24, and his 50-year-old father, who was also shot de@d by officers, targeted families during a Hanukkah celebration at Australia’s most famous beach.
Witnesses said two men stepped out of the vehicle on Campbell Parade, and over the course of roughly 10 minutes, the two terrorists fired around 50 bullets into the gathered crowd.
Akram, who was sh0t, arrested, and remains in custody, reportedly told his mother he was going on a fishing trip.
His father, 50, was gunned down at the scene.
The de@th toll from the massacre rose to 16 by Monday morning local time, and includes a 10-year-old child. The oldest fatal victim is understood to be 87.
