Veteran Journalist Olatunji Bello Appointed as New CEO of Nigeria’s Consumer Protection Agency

Tinubu Appoints Veteran Journalist Olatunji Bello Appointed as New CEO of Nigeria’s Consumer Protection Agency.

Olatunji Bello has been named the new CEO EEV of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu.

He is a versatile person who has acquired in his time the disciplines of law, administration, and journalism. In addition to his Master’s Degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos, he completed his law studies and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002 at this institution.

The very first job of Mr. Bello in the field of journalism was at Concord Newspapers in 1985, where he, for example, held such positions as Group Political Editor, Sunday Concord Editor, and the Editor of National Concord. He obtained the US Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship and was made the Chairman of the Editorial Board of THISDAY Newspapers in 2001.

Apart from his media career, Mr. Bello also served as a member of the Cabinet and the Environment Commissioner in Lagos state. This character of having substantial exposure to public and private institutions is exactly what he is acknowledged for by the FCCPC Management Board.

President Tinubu described Bello as the one in them who with his stewardship will make the Commission reach;

“The thoroughgoing execution of the ‘key value’ of protecting and advancing the rights and welfare of Nigerian consumers and guaranteeing the execution of safety standards for the products and services concerned through the regulation of performance of market units and competition among them to the society’s benefit.”

The FCCPC is a prime agency which is the driving force of the process related to fair competition and the safeguarding of the customers’ rights in Nigeria. Bello’s appointment is considerate of very hard times that the country is going through the economic problems and at the same time, it is a move dedicated to the strengthening of the healthy consumer protection mechanisms.

Having an outstanding track record and expertise in various fields of Olatunji Bello makes him high up the list of the possible administrators of FCCPC. The confirmation of the appointment will be done by the Senate of Nigeria.

The statement read

“President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr. Olatunji Bello as the new Chief Executive Officer/Executive Vice-Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), pending confirmation by the Senate.

“Mr. Bello is a lawyer, administrator, and renowned journalist. He is the former secretary to the Lagos State Government and holds a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos. He studied Law at the same university and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002.

“Mr. Bello began his career in journalism at the Concord Newspapers in 1985 and held the positions of Group Political Editor; Sunday Concord Editor, and Editor, National Concord. 

“He is a winner of the US Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship and was appointed the Chairman, Editorial Board of THISDAY Newspapers in 2001.

“He also served as Commissioner for Environment under various administrations in Lagos State.

“The President expects that the new Chief Executive Officer of this important agency will ensure the holistic realization of the Commission’s mandate of protecting and promoting the interest and welfare of Nigerian consumers and ensuring the adoption of measures to guarantee the safety and quality of goods and services.”
