The United States was reportedly unable to establish contact with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the final hours before launching airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, according to new reports.
The failed diplomatic outreach came just ahead of Saturday’s U.S. military operation, which President Donald Trump later described as having caused “monumental damage” to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
US President Trump, in a late Sunday post on Truth Social, once again touted the impact of the strikes, citing newly released satellite imagery of the targeted nuclear facilities.
“Monumental Damage was done to all Nuclear sites in Iran, as shown by satellite images. Obliteration is an accurate term!” Trump wrote. “The white structure shown is deeply embedded into the rock, with even its roof well below the ground level, and completely shielded from flame. The biggest damage took place far below ground level. Bullseye!!!”
The satellite images, including those of the Fordow nuclear facility, show significant surface damage. The Fordow site, built deep inside a mountain to shield it from aerial attacks, was hit with GBU-57 “bunker buster” bombs designed to penetrate hardened underground targets.
According to U.S. officials cited by The New York Times, while the strikes flattened portions of the surrounding terrain, it remains unclear whether the enriched uranium stockpiled and moved between multiple sites in recent months was destroyed.
