An autopsy has concluded that the death of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, the 21-year-old student found hanging from a tree at Delta State University earlier this week, was a suicide.
The Cleveland Police Department said the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death was hanging, consistent with its initial investigation. Toxicology results are still pending and may take several weeks.
Police confirmed that all files connected to the case have been forwarded to the FBI and the US Attorney’s Office for further review.
Reed, a student from Grenada, Mississippi, was discovered dead on campus on Monday. Authorities have said no foul play is suspected. The Clarion Ledger reported that on the same day, in a separate case, a 36-year-old man named Cory Zukatis was also found hanging from a tree about 100 miles south of Delta State.
The Reed family’s attorney, Vanessa Jones, has said the family was initially informed that Reed had been found in his dorm room and expressed frustration at what they described as a lack of information about the investigation.
