Two to be tried for illegal waste dumping in Lagos

Two women are set to be prosecuted for illegal waste dumping following a surveillance operation in the Sangotedo area.

Margaret Solomon, aged 29, and Onyia Elizabeth, 42, were apprehended by LAWMA’s waste infractions and surveillance team during a night operation along the Lekki Expressway.

LAWMA CEO Muyiwa Gbadegeshin confirmed their arrest in a statement on his official X handle on Thursday, July 17,.

“Upon apprehension, the suspects were unable to provide verifiable residential addresses and have since been transferred to LAWMA’s legal team for prosecution,” he said.

He stated that the prosecution will proceed under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law (EMPL 2017).
Video and photographic evidence were collected at the scene to support the legal case.

Gbadegeshin emphasised the importance of proper waste disposal, noting that every Lagos resident has a legal duty to maintain environmental hygiene.

He advised citizens to register with approved waste operators, use LAWMA-certified bins, and avoid unauthorised dumping.

He warned, “Failure to comply attracts arrest, fines up to ₦250,000 and imprisonment of up to three months.”
