This silly host narrative must stop. Nobody in Lagos lives in a house for free - Comedian Acapella

Nigerian comedian Acapella has criticized the widely circulated idea that Lagos is “hosting” other Nigerians, calling the notion “silly” and emphasizing that Lagos belongs to all citizens.

In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Acapella argued that Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial hub, is open to all Nigerians who wish to live and work there. He stated that residents in Lagos are not receiving any special favors from the government simply because they are not of Lagos origin.

“Lagos is not hosting anybody. Lagos is the commercial hub of Nigeria. Nobody that came here lives in a house for free,” he wrote. “Any Nigerian has the right to freely live and make an impact where they want within the Nigerian states.”

He added that the Lagos State government does not provide special privileges to non-indigenes, questioning what the term “host” actually implies. Acapella further drew comparisons with Abuja, noting that many Yorubas currently reside in the capital and are involved in policymaking without facing similar backlash from indigenous groups.

“What exactly does your host mean? We have more Yorubas in Abuja currently, making policies that affect Abuja indigenes. And the entire Nation — why Abuja indigenes never pursue them,” he stated.

His remarks were in response to another X user, Omolade Fatoyinbo, who suggested that non-indigenes should promote the state instead of criticizing it and “insulting your host.”

Acapella’s statement contributes to the ongoing national discourse about identity, belonging, and regional inclusion, especially in major urban centers like Lagos.
