We took a closer look at the incident that led to Sunny’s detention since he was found guilty and received a prison term recently.

Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, an American businessman who has been convicted of fraud, was the former president and COO of Theranos, a privately held health technology company founded by his then-girlfriend Elizabeth Holmes.

He was the second-largest contributor to Theranos’ collapse, which had duped investors by asserting that company had created a breakthrough blood test that only needed a little amount of blood, similar to that from a fingerstick.

Theranos started to get widespread scrutiny in 2015 because of its dubious claims and practices.

The Company was ultimately liquidated. Balwani and Holmes were charged with crimes by federal authorities for running the Company as a multi-million dollar fraud ring against customers and investors.

Due to his involvement with the now-defunct blood testing company, Sunny Balwani, a former Theranos executive, was found guilty of all 12 fraud counts leveled against him.

The decision closes the final chapter of the Company’s legal struggle, which began more than eight years ago with challenging inquiries about Theranos’ blood testing technology.

Balwani’s judgment is also a harsher decision than that of Elizabeth Holmes, his former partner in business and girlfriend, who was found guilty in January on only four of 11 precise charges.

At one point, Holmes was in charge of Theranos’ laboratory and had contributed millions of his own funds to the business.

In contrast to Balwani, who was found guilty of all claims, including those that were patient-specific, Holmes was found guilty of misleading investors but not of deceiving patients.

Jurors in San Jose, California, announced their decision on Thursday following a 13-week trial that covered Balwani’s role with the medical tech company that was tipped to revolutionize the field of medicine.

The panel, which was made up of five men and seven women, took 32 hours to reach a decision.

Sunny Balwani Arrest And Charges

The 58-year-old businessman, who had pleaded not guilty, now faced a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Holmes will be sentenced on September 26 while out on bail. Balwani will receive his sentence on November 15.

Former Theranos executive Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani received a sentence of almost 13 years in jail on Wednesday for his role in the company’s blood-testing scam.

The CEO, who also participated in one of the largest scandals to hit Silicon Valley, had a phrase that was a little bit longer than mine.

In July, a jury found 57-year-old Balwani guilty of conspiracy and fraud in connection with the Company’s false medical technology, which injured patients and conned investors.

The Company’s 38-year-old founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes received more than 11 years in prison for her role in the fraud less than three weeks prior to receiving his sentence. The scheme has been the subject of a book, an HBO documentary, and an award-winning TV series.
