Singer Chappell Roan defends her wildly revealing Grammys 2026 dress

Singer Chappell Roan has dismissed the controversy surrounding her barely-there outfit at the 2026 Grammy Awards, insisting the look was not as outrageous as some critics claimed.

Roan addressed the reaction by sharing several photos of herself on Instagram wearing the sheer burgundy Mugler gown she debuted on the red carpet. The revealing dress, which featured a long train and was attached to her chest with faux piercings, quickly became one of the most talked-about fashion moments of the night.

“Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit,” Roan wrote in the caption accompanying the images. She added: “The look’s actually so awesome and weird.”

Encouraging self-expression, the singer continued: “I recommend just exercising your free will, it’s really fun and silly. Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me!!”

Many fans echoed her sentiment in the comments, describing the look as “the coolest” and “simply perfect,” despite some viewers admitting they were initially taken aback by the bold design.

Roan, best known for her hit “Hot to Go,” was nominated for two awards on the night, Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, both for her song “The Subway.”

She did not win either category, with Record of the Year going to Kendrick Lamar for “Luther,” and Best Pop Solo Performance awarded to Lola Young for “Messy.”

Despite leaving the ceremony without a trophy, Roan’s appearance ensured she remained one of the evening’s most discussed stars.

In addition to the revealing cut, the outfit allowed Roan to showcase an array of temporary body art, including a pony motif on her chest and a large lace-style design across her back. She credited artist Jenny Collins of Puppy Puppy Playtime for creating the temporary tattoos.

Roan accessorised the look with statement jewellery by Buccellati, including a gold choker and matching earrings. She initially arrived on the red carpet draped in a sheer burgundy cape, which she later removed for the full reveal.

During the ceremony, Roan changed outfits to present the Best New Artist award to Olivia Dean. For that appearance, she opted for a more conservative Rodarte dress from the fashion house’s 2007 fall/winter collection.

She later closed out the night in a white caped ensemble from Dilara Findikoglu’s spring/summer 2026 collection.
