French Navy is facing a security scare after a sailor inadvertently revealed the location of its flagship aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, through a fitness tracking app.
The crew member reportedly logged a 4.3-mile run while jogging on deck during an ակտիվ deployment in the eastern Mediterranean. The activity was uploaded publicly on Strava, which mapped the route and effectively exposed the warship’s location near Cyprus in near real time.
The carrier had been deployed under the direction of Emmanuel Macron as part of efforts to secure key maritime routes amid rising tensions linked to the Middle East conflict involving Iran.
While the presence of the vessel in the region was known, its exact coordinates are considered highly sensitive, particularly during active military operations. The incident has raised concerns about operational security and the risks posed by publicly shared digital data.
French military authorities confirmed the action violated strict regulations, stressing that such disclosures do not comply with operational protocols. Officials warned that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken and emphasised the importance of “digital hygiene” among deployed personnel.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about fitness apps like Strava inadvertently exposing sensitive military information. Similar incidents in the past have revealed patrol routes, troop movements, and even security details linked to world leaders.
Reports also suggest that other personnel may have shared geotagged activity from active naval vessels, further increasing concern within defence circles.
