Operatives of the Lagos state police command today January 28, fired teargas canisters at residents who staged a protest at the Lagos state House of Assembly complex over ongoing demolitions in several communities.
Â
The protesters had gathered at the assembly complex to express opposition to demolitions affecting Makoko, Owode Onirin, Oworonshoki, Otumara and Baba-Ijora, accusing the state government of carrying out the exercises without adequate consultation, compensation or resettlement plans.
Â
The peaceful protest took a different turn when the teargas canisters were fired. The protesters immediately took to their heels. Some of them sustained injuries while fleeing to safety.
