The Cross River State Police Command has uncovered an illegal mortuary in Isong Inyang Community, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state, where eight decomposed bodies were recovered.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, the command confirmed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the discovery. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is attached to a company operating in the area.
According to the statement, the discovery followed credible information received on February 13, 2026, regarding the presence of corpses at a local embalming hall in Isong Inyang Community along the Calabar–Ikom Highway.
“At about 11:56 hours on the said date, credible information was received regarding the presence of corpses at the facility. Operatives were immediately mobilised to the scene to verify the report. Upon arrival, eight well-dried corpses were discovered in the hall,” the statement read.
The police identified the suspect as Sunday Ben Reuben, a native of Nsit Ibom in Akwa Ibom State. He is reportedly a mortician attached to Enghaut Company Mortuary in Akamkpa Local Government Area.
He is currently in police custody as investigations continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the discovery and whether any laws were breached.
The command urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, assuring that further verified updates would be communicated in due course.
