The Niger State Police Command has arrested one of the inmates who escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja.
Rainfall destroyed the walls of the prison on April 23, 2024 and led to the escape of 118 inmates.
The spokesperson of the command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, October 23, 2025 said Jemilu Ibrahim, was serving a jail term before the jailbreak.
According to the PPRO, the suspect was apprehended during a routine patrol by operatives of the “B” Division, Suleja, on October 15.
“Earlier on October 15, 2025 at about 8.30pm, Police surveillance team attached ‘B’ Div Suleja, while on routine patrol along Suleja-Madalla road, intercepted one Jemilu Ibrahim of Timber-shed area, Kwata Madalla with a containing some illicit substances and other suspected stolen items such as ATM cards, and Phones,” the statement read.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that he was involved in a robbery case with firearms, and prosecuted. He was discovered to be among inmates that escaped in 2024 as a result of the wall collapse at Suleja Correctional Center during the heavy downpour. The inmate has been transferred to SCID for onward transfer to the Correctional Center.”
Similarly, on October 19, 2025 at about 1am, while in continuation of routine patrol, one Lukman Umar 23yrs of APC Quarters 1, Suleja was found, about to be lynched by mob, having taken a meal at a stall around Kantoma bridge area, and he attempted to flee without payment.
Police operatives of the unit immediately intervened and the suspect was rescued and arrested.
In the course of investigation, the suspect confessed to being a member of a robbery syndicate dealing in vehicles, motorcycles and phone robberies around the area.
The suspect also mentioned other members of his gang as; Saifullahi Ibrahim 34yrs of APC Quarters, Lawali, Garba and Ayuba.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Saifullahi Ibrahim at his residence in Dakwa with recovery of three locally fabricated revolver guns, and two knives.
Both suspects also said they usually disguised themselves to be members of the community’s vigilante as cover up.
The PPRO added that investigation is still ongoing with a view to identifying and arresting other members of the syndicate after which they will be prosecuted accordingly.
