Lagos government seizes 10 trucks for violating Third Mainland Bridge restrictions

The Lagos State Government has impounded 10 articulated trucks and heavy-duty vehicles for violating access restrictions on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The action was taken by a newly launched enforcement team assigned to ensure strict adherence to the state’s traffic regulations regarding restricted routes.

Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by Taofiq Adebayo, spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Giwa explained that the operation, which took place over the weekend, reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to protecting both lives and public infrastructure through uncompromising enforcement of traffic laws.

“This initiative demonstrates the government’s zero-tolerance approach to violations that threaten public safety and the structural integrity of key transport corridors,” he said.

He noted that the enforcement follows multiple stakeholder engagements, public awareness campaigns, and formal advisories that have been issued to alert truck operators about the ban on articulated vehicles using the bridge.

Despite these efforts, Giwa said, some operators have continued to disregard the order, endangering both commuters and the structural health of the bridge.

The Third Mainland Bridge, a critical link between the Lagos mainland and the Island, is legally restricted to vehicles weighing no more than nine tonnes, particularly after undergoing major rehabilitation works.

“The restriction is not arbitrary. It is based on engineering assessments and is supported by existing traffic regulations. Non-compliance will now attract serious consequences,” Giwa added.

He further revealed that LASTMA officers have been instructed to strictly enforce the restrictions, with no exemptions granted to offenders. In addition, Giwa said the bridge is now equipped with high-definition surveillance cameras capable of real-time monitoring and automated violation tracking.

“These technological upgrades allow for swift identification of violators and ensure consistent enforcement,” he said.

According to him, the crackdown is part of a broader strategy by Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration to promote responsible road use and maintain infrastructure integrity.

“The measure is preventive, not punitive. The aim is to avoid structural fatigue and ensure safe, smooth traffic flow. Violators will have their trucks impounded and face lawful sanctions,” he added.
