A UK-based Nigerian lawyer has shared a deeply personal account of how she narrowly escaped being k!lled during a violent incident in Kano in 2004, saying the trauma has followed her into adulthood.
Writing on social media, Adaugo described watching an innocent woman frying akara being brutally attacked and murdered with her baby beside her. She said the scene has remained etched in her memory ever since.
According to her, she survived only because she spoke Hausa and appeared northern enough to blend in. Her late best friend told bystanders her name was “Hafsat,” and that quick lie, she said, was what allowed her to pass through the chaos unharmed.
She said the experience shaped how she responds when people downplay insecurity in northern Nigeria, stressing that she grew up witnessing the poverty, hunger and unrest that were steadily consuming communities once considered peaceful.
Adaugo also recalled seeing more violence years later during her national service in Jos, an experience she says shattered whatever hope she still held for peace.
She expressed fear over Nigeria’s current trajectory, calling it a sinking nation and voicing concern that some of those who should be advocating for better governance now dismiss the scale of suffering and killings occurring across the country.
