“I trusted my friend with my school fees… she spent it” — X user shares heartbreaking true-life story

?I trusted my friend with my school fees? she spent it? ? X user shares heartbreaking true-life story

An X user has shared a painful real-life experience after someone asked people online to “mind sharing a true life story.”

According to the user, the incident happened in 2023 during Nigeria’s cash redesign and cash scarcity period.

At the time, they had just gained admission into the university but hadn’t completed registration yet, so they couldn’t pay their school fees immediately. Their parents handed them the money to keep safe until payment could be made.

Because of the cash shortage, the user decided to rely on a close friend from secondary school who ran a POS business. They asked her to transfer the money into their bank account.

She claimed there were network issues and promised to send it later.

The alert never came.

When asked the next day, she blamed the bank. Days turned into weeks of excuses, until she finally confessed that she had used the money to settle her own debt, promising to replace it.

She never did.

The user said she begged and cried, but nothing came back. Out of shame and fear, she couldn’t bring herself to tell her parents what had happened.

Unable to pay her school fees, she didn’t resume school.

For months, she kept up the lie, even going as far as faking results to make it believable.

In 2024, the user took JAMB again and was lucky to gain admission into another university. But the guilt never left.

She admitted that every night, she still feels heavy with guilt for deceiving her parents, all because of a trust that was broken at the worst possible time..
