Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has revealed that he has not taken any loans from local or international financial institutions since assuming office two years ago.
Speaking during a Hausa-language interview with several radio stations in Kaduna as part of activities marking his administration’s second anniversary, the governor explained that his decision was aimed at avoiding further debt accumulation for the state.
Sani noted that although numerous banks had approached him with various loan offers, he declined them all. Instead, he chose to implement cost-saving measures to ensure a more efficient administration.
He disclosed that he slashed allowances and reduced some of the perks of top government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government and commissioners.
“The Secretary to the State Government is a retired federal permanent secretary and a former consultant with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Some of my commissioners were earning significantly higher salaries in their previous positions,” Sani said.
“I persuaded them to forfeit their performance bonuses and to continue using the official vehicles from the previous administration. This is how we have managed to run the government without taking a single loan.”
