A known government critic in Adamawa State, Mallam Hussaini Gambo Nakura, who was docked for allegedly insulting the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and other political figures, has regained temporary freedom after spending 23 days in prison custody.
Nakura was granted bail on Friday, October 3, 2024 by a Yola High Court.
Justice Christopher Mapeo ruled that the offences for which Nakura was arraigned were bailable, quashing earlier proceedings at Chief Magistrate Court II which had ordered his remand since September 10, 2025.
The court granted Nakura bail in the sum of N5 million with a reliable surety and ordered that the case be transferred to Upper Area Court II, Yola, for further adjudication.
The activist had been accused of defaming Ribadu; the wife of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Hajiya Aisha Buhari; her brother, Dr. Modi Halilu; and the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East Zone), Mustapha Salihu.
Nakura’s arrest and prolonged detention had sparked outrage among civil society groups and concerned stakeholders in Adamawa.
The activist was first invited by the Adamawa State Police Command on September 10 following a petition accusing him of defamation, inciting disturbance, and using abusive language.
He was alleged to have accused Ribadu and Aisha Buhari of hijacking fertiliser and farm inputs meant for farmers, while distributing expired food items to citizens.
Upon honouring the police invitation, Nakura was reportedly charged to court the same day.
He was remanded after being slammed with what his supporters described as “extremely harsh bail conditions” by Upper Magistrate Court No. 2, Yola.
A subsequent bail application at the Adamawa State High Court was also rejected.
