The CEO of Gavi, Dr. Sania Nishtar, has expressed profound concern over the state of affairs and given assurances that the organization is keeping a close eye on the outbreak and is prepared to provide emergency vaccination doses to help stop its spread and safeguard those who are most vulnerable.
Gavi-funded global cholera vaccine stockpile is currently fully restocked and ready to support Nigeria’s response.
Three pre-qualified oral cholera vaccines from the World Health Organization are included in this stockpile: Euvichol®, ShancholTM, and Dukoral®. Each dose is necessary for complete protection.
The Emergency Operation Centre has been activated by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) in order to strengthen surveillance and diagnostic capabilities, improve case management, expedite communication, coordinate the national response, and ramp up public awareness campaigns.
The outbreak has already resulted in 54 fatalities and affected 1,579 suspected cases in 32 states and 115 local government districts, according to the NCDC.
