Following a traffic check in the Keys, a Fort Myers couple was Arrested After Toddler Found in a Filthy Car by Florida deputies discovered a 2-year-old son inside the car who was covered in bugs and smelled like feces.
The 22-year-old Zachary Sousa Engren was operating a Chevrolet car when the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office claimed it was stopped after receiving reports of a dangerous driver.
According to sheriff’s office spokesperson Adam Linhardt, deputies discovered the vehicle in “squalid” conditions that were “filthy” and “loaded with used food containers, clothes, and trash.” He added that the deputies also discovered boxes of insects and reptiles in the trunk. The youngster was in a car seat,
Jillian Larae Meyers, 20, and a 24-year-old male were the other passengers in the vehicle. The deputies were informed by Engren and Meyers that the boy was in their care.
Both suspects claimed to be caring for the infant and to have diapers on hand, but deputies failed to find any in the car, according to Linhardt. Both provided contradictory accounts of when the child last ate. All three of the adults claimed to be residing in the car.
The 24-year-old, who was not detained, allegedly stated that the gang was in the Keys to “gather reptiles and insects.”
According to Linhardt, deputies also discovered real and synthetic marijuana in the vehicle as well as a 40-caliber Glock handgun under the passenger seat.
The Florida Department of Children and Families was given custody of the toddler.
Engren and Meyer were accused of abusing children and possessing marijuana, synthetic marijuana, and marijuana accessory items.
Meyers is accused of carrying weapons without a license, while Engren was accused of having a gun while a felon.
