Former Manchester City midfielder Kiki Musampa has been arrested in the Netherlands over an alleged £100,000 tax fraud.
Musampa, 48, who played 41 times for City during an 18-month loan spell from Atlético Madrid between 2005 and 2006, was reportedly detained by Dutch authorities on Tuesday. According to investigators from the Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD), he is accused of declaring himself a tax resident abroad while continuing to earn income in the Netherlands.
During a raid on his home, police were said to have seized documents and luxury watches. His 65-year-old accountant was also arrested. Musampa was later released from custody on Wednesday afternoon, though investigations are ongoing.
The former Ajax winger, nicknamed “Chris,” enjoyed a decorated playing career, winning the Champions League and two Dutch league titles with Ajax before stints in France, Spain, England, Turkey, South Korea and back in the Netherlands, where he retired in 2009 with Willem II. He also represented the Netherlands at youth level 43 times.
Since retiring, Musampa has pursued a coaching career and is currently the assistant manager of Jong Ajax, the club’s reserve team. Reports in Holland suggest he has faced long-running tax disputes, with a property in Amsterdam recently repossessed.
Reacting to the arrest, Ajax said: “We are aware of Kiki Musampa’s arrest, but we think it is too early to react to it in detail.”
