- Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has filed a lawsuit against the Kaduna State House of Assembly over allegations that his administration embezzled ₦432 billion during his 8-year tenure.
- El-Rufai claims the Assembly’s ad-hoc committee report that indicted him for corruption violated his right to a fair hearing, and he has asked the court to declare the report null and void.
- El-Rufai’s lawyer stated that he approached the court as a Nigerian citizen entitled to a fair hearing before his rights can be determined by any investigative body or court.
Newsypeople- Malam Nasir El-Rufai, the recent eminent governor in Kaduna State, has coordinated lawful activities to the Kaduna State House of Assembly over their assertions that his organization fraudulently took away ₦432 billion.
El-Rufai was given a basic Fundamental Rights Enforcement Suit in the Court of Federal Recruitment of Kaduna where he denied the report of the Kaduna Assembly Committee that blamed him and his government for the supposed acts of corruption.
In that complaint, the claimant, Mr. El-Rufai is the person who brings the suit, wants the court to pronounce the report of the Commission of Inquiry ineffective and thereby delete its results, holding that no fair hearing was given to the defendant before the accusations could be made.
The Assembly of Kaduna, however, set up an ad hoc committee to look into such issues as the loans, and the contracts that were put into place within the tenure of the 8-year guba as the governor of the state.
The report which they submitted, in June 2024, revealed that an amount of ₦423 billion has been removed by the El-Rufai administration and the state is left with huge debts.
This committee proposed that El-Rufai and certain members of his cabinet should be carried out a through investigation which would lead to prosecution by security agents and anti-corruption authorities.
Notwithstanding, according to El-Rufaf’s, Muyiwa Adekeye, things are completely different. He was vehement that the allegations are illogical as well as being driven by vengeance motives. He cleared the air on the fact that El-Rufai was an upright worker of the state of Kaduna and that the then governor operated within the constraints as provided for in the laws.
The legal tussle felicitating the former governor and the State House of the Assembly of Kaduna is expected to be played out in the Federal High Court, where El-Rufai is considering taking legal action not only for his name to be cleared, but also regarding the Assembly’s investigation report.
