The Delta state police Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, has reacted to a trending video of a man who identified himself as “DJ young” accusing some officers attached to the Ebrumede Division, Warri Area Command in the state of extortion.
In the viral video, the man claimed he was at a party to carry out his duty when the police officers stormed the venue to raid. He said the whole place became rowdy as guests took to their heels in order not to get arrested.
DJ Young mentioned that his girlfriend, who runs a POS business, was at the party, and in fear, took to her heels during the chaos. He said while running, the bundle of cash totalling N200,000 fell out of his girlfriend’s bag. He said he saw the money and informed the officers that it belonged to his girlfriend. He said the officers confiscated the money and asked him to tell his girlfriend to see them for identification and release. He said he immediately alerted her, and when she came, the officers refused to give her the money and turned around to start assaulting him. He mentioned that the officers even told him that he should be thankful that he was not picked up.
He said he was arrested and detained for a night and was released after bail payment. He said the officers, however, refused to release the confiscated money and instead, carted away some money found in his girlfriend’s bag.
In a statement released, the spokesperson of the command, SP Bright Edafe, said the state Commissioner views such allegations with utmost seriousness and unequivocally states that any form of abuse or unprofessional conduct by police officers will not be condoned under any circumstances.
‘’To this end, the CP has directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the incident. He encourages any individual or group particularly the victim “DJ young” who appeared in the recorded video to contact the command through the Complaint Response Unit’s dedicated numbers: 09155570008 or 09011112311.”he said
