At the Nutrivision 2024 event in Abuja, he noted that Nigeria’s tax collection rates are alarmingly low, which affects the government’s capacity to fund essential public services.

Gates emphasized that for citizens to have confidence in government initiatives related to health and education, there must be a commitment to managing the finances allocated for these sectors effectively. He remarked that improving the reliability of health programs could enable greater fiscal flexibility and prioritize funding for primary healthcare.

Additionally, Bill Gates expressed hope for Nigeria’s agricultural prospects, suggesting the nation could shift from being a net food importer to becoming a significant food exporter. He highlighted the necessity for better credit facilities, thorough soil surveys, and effective advisory services for farmers as vital components for this shift.

Gates asserted that with adequate resources, Nigeria could greatly increase its agricultural output, which would not only bolster food security but also contribute to overall economic stability. He underscored the importance of utilizing digital technologies and innovative farming methods to tackle challenges related to nutrition and equity.

Furthermore, Gates pointed out that Nigeria has received the largest intervention fund from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Africa, reflecting the foundation’s commitment to tackling health disparities and enhancing agricultural productivity in the nation.

He noted that the foundation intends to invest more in primary healthcare and agriculture with the goal of reducing malnutrition and improving food quality.
