According to witnesses, Grant Wahl collapsed in the second half of extra time during Argentina’s quarterfinal match against the Netherlands at Qatar’s 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The 48-year-old sports analyst died early Saturday while covering Argentina’s World Cup match against the Netherlands. He was one of the most well-known soccer writers in the United States.

When the event during overtime, the press box reporters close to the sports commentator reportedly asked for help at Lusail Iconic Stadium after the analyst reportedly slumped back in his seat.

Despite the speedy response of emergency personnel, the reporters claimed that later they were informed by sources that Wahl had passed away.

According to ESPN, the sports analyst wrote on his website on December 5 that he had attended a medical center in Qatar while covering his ninth World Cup.

Grant stated in his podcast on Thursday that he had bronchitis. He went back to the doctor and was given ibuprofen and cough medicine, and he soon recovered.

Unfortunately, Grant’s cause of death and obituary have been made public, and it is not known what exactly happened to cause his passing.

Grant is survived by his wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, an attending physician at Bellevue Hospital Center, clinical associate professor of medicine at New York University School of Medicine, and contributor to CBS Coverage’s medical news.

Celine Gounder, an American doctor and medical journalist who focuses on infectious illnesses and global health, is Wahl’s wife.

His wife Gounder tweeted Friday night that she was in “total shock” and thanked everyone for supporting her husband.

Ned Price, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, tweeted that the country is “engaging with senior Qatari officials to ensure that Grant’s family’s wishes are realized as soon as possible.”

In a statement Friday night, U.S. Soccer expressed their “heartbreak” at the hearing of Wahl’s passing.
