A 26-year-old woman Alexandra Eckersley Arrested for giving birth in the woods of New Hampshire and first misdirecting emergency responders to the location of the infant.
Alexandra Eckersley’s infant was discovered by firefighters around 2 a.m. Monday in 18-degree weather, according to Manchester Police.
Eckersley contacted police for assistance after giving birth but first gave the erroneous location for the infant, according to authorities. She then “gave the true position of the baby and led officers to the area” more than an hour later. The baby was discovered in a tent, battling to breathe, and was brought to a hospital, according to NECN.
“They immediately started supporting the infant to breathe and keeping the baby warm, and they hurried to the hospital in the fire engine,” said Manchester Fire Chief Jon Starr. “We were astonished that the infant was still alive, but it simply speaks to the professionalism of Manchester’s first responders.”
Eckersley was charged with felony reckless conduct and was still in the hospital Tuesday morning, according to police. She was initially arrested on an unrelated warrant for endangering a child’s welfare.
