Prosecutors have charged a 17-year-old Nigerian boy, Emmanuel Awobiyi, for the m8rder of a 38-year-old man, William Deaton on the northwest side of Indianapolis, United States of America.
Awobiyi, of Indianapolis, has been charged with m8rder. His initial hearing was Thursday, October 23.
IMPD officers responded to the 5200 block of Austral Drive, near the 56th Street exit on Interstate 465, just after 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 30 on the report of a person shot.
According to court documents, Awobiyi was meeting up with a woman, and they got into a fight.
Police said Awobiyi “became aggressive” with the woman and pointed a gun at her, causing the female to “scream for help,” and she called 38-year-old William E. Deaton II, who drove to help her.
Police said when Deaton arrived, Awobiyi fired several shots at Deaton, k!lling him.
Medics pronounced Deaton dead at the scene.
Police said they were told by witnesses that Awoniyi ran from the scene just before they got there and were not able to find him.
MPD homicide detectives responded and started their investigation by canvassing the area for witnesses, video footage and forensic evidence.
IMPD detectives got a search warrant for a home on Stanhope Way, near where the shooting happened.
In video footage obtained by law enforcement, footage reportedly shows Awobiyi walking down Austral Drive before going into the woods behind some houses.
The documents also state that the video shows Deaton getting out of his vehicle and starting to run towards the back of the house.
“Seconds after (Deaton) leaves the camera view, (the viewer hears) multiple gunshots ring out,” the documents said.
“Again, just seconds later, (the viewer sees) the suspect running from behind the houses and heading south on Austral Drive.”
Law enforcement officials identified Awobiyi through the video footage and the witness reportedly identified Awobiyi as the alleged shooter.
Awobiyi was taken into custody on Monday, October 20, after he was found walking in the neighborhood.
During a search of Awobiyi’s home, law enforcement officials reportedly found a gun wrapped in a plastic bag inside the tank of a toilet.
However, during an interview with Awobiyi, he reportedly told law enforcement that he had a gun inside the home.
After speaking with detectives, Awob
iyi was later charged with m8rder.
According to court documents, a remote attorney conference in this case is scheduled for November 20.
