Cardinals have entered St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican to celebrate a final Mass before the conclave to elect the next pope.

The Mass will be celebrated before they start the process of electing a new leader of the Catholic Church following the death of Pope Francis on 21 April at the age of 88.

The dean of the College of Cardinals, Giovanni Battista Re, is celebrating the Mass to pray that the 133 cardinals find wisdom, good counsel, and understanding before they enter the Sistine Chapel later in the day to begin casting their first ballots.

The College of Cardinals, comprising 133 eligible cardinals from 70 countries, will elect a new leader for the 1.4 billion-strong Catholic Church. During the conclave, they’ll be sequestered from the outside world, surrendering their mobile phones and operating in a cell-phone-jammed environment around the Vatican to prevent external communications.
