Benue k!llings: 10-month-old survivor of Yelwata attack reunites with his father

A 10-month-old baby, Targule Aya, who miraculously survived the brutal attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, has been reunited with his father at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.

Acting Public Relations & Protocol Department of BSUTH, Tsenzughul Moses, who disclosed this in a statement said father and child were reunited on Tuesday, 17th June, 2025.

According to the statement, Baby Aya was among the survivors found by a good Samaritan who was himself fleeing the scene. His mother and three siblings didn’t survive the attack.

The infant, traumatized and abandoned, was rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, where he was admitted for urgent medical care after being stabbed at his back.

Upon the baby’s arrival, the Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, Terungwa Stephen Hwande, ordered that the child be immediately taken to the Paediatric Medical Ward for treatment.

Realizing the baby was alone and vulnerable, he also instructed that a caregiver be assigned to look after him during the period of his recovery.

Days later, another victim of the Yelwata attack, Mrs. Blessing Audu, who was also receiving treatment at the hospital, recognized the baby and raised an alert.

Blessing immediately contacted the baby’s father, Mr. Targule Aya, who rushed to the hospital.

In an emotional scene filled with tears, Mr. Aya embraced his only surviving child, having lost his wife and three other children in the same attack and the moment of reunion brought some solace in the midst of overwhelming grief.

Speaking through tears, Mr. Targule Aya expressed deep gratitude to the hospital and state that God has used this hospital to save my only remaining child. I will never forget the kindness shown to us,and also thanked the doctors, nurses, and the caregiver for their dedication and love.

Now homeless and with nothing left, Mr. Aya appealed to the government, humanitarian organizations, and kind-hearted individuals for assistance, as they do not have no home to return to and nothing to eat, and pleaded for help to survive and rebuild what is left of our lives.
