Obi Cubana, a well-known billionaire businessman from Nigeria, has urged social media and blogs to stop highlighting and publicizing stories about young people demeaning and disrespecting their elders.
Cubana call was prompted by a recent online fight between music executive Paul Okoye, who is the partner of actress Iyabo Ojo, and activist Verydarkman.
Iyabo Ojo was not invited to Davido’s main wedding ceremony, as Verydarkman had first claimed, but Okoye corrected him. As a result, Verydarkman started insulting Okoye. Obi Cubana responded by criticizing the trend of young people disrepecting their elders on his Instagram page.
In his opinion, highlighting and publicizing such acts of disrespect on blogs and social media just serves to legitimize and promote the offending behavior. Cubana underlined the importance of encouraging deference to elders and ending the spread of “rubbish” on social media.
He wrote,
“Dear blogs, please stop promoting young people who denigrate seniors! You are enabling them, and we cannot tolerate more garbage. Please stop.”
The billionaire’s call has provoked a range of responses on social media. As all parties involved are “adults,” some have commented that the insults have gone both ways.
