“You abandoned us” – Omije Ojumi’s first daughter addresses father at Service of Songs

The first daughter of late Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, gave a heart-wrenching tribute to her mother during the service of songs held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, in Lagos.

A Mother’s Sacrifice Remembered

Jomiloju, Omije Ojumi’s eldest daughter, recounted the struggles their mother faced in raising them single-handedly after their father abandoned the family.

She described Omije Ojumi as a devoted mother who worked tirelessly to ensure her children grew up as responsible and disciplined adults.

“Ever since my father left us, he didn’t care and never called—imagine he’s coming now. My mother was always there for us, even when our father wasn’t,” Jomiloju said, her voice trembling. “Her focus was to make sure we turned out responsible and did better than she did in her marital journey… But it’s a shame that my mother left so early and didn’t wait to enjoy the fruit of her labor.”

During her emotional speech, Jomiloju highlighted her mother’s resilience, calling her a strong and virtuous woman who carried the family’s burdens alone.

She recalled how Omije Ojumi consistently prioritized their education, enrolling them in the best schools she could afford, and instilling in them values such as respect, hard work, and faith.

Jomiloju explained that her mother often reminded them to plan for the future and live responsibly.

A Promise to Continue the Legacy

In her tribute, Jomiloju vowed to honor her mother’s sacrifices by caring for her younger brother, William.

She pledged to guide him in becoming the prayerful and responsible man their mother had always envisioned.

“My mother’s sacrifices will not be forgotten. William and I will strive to make her proud by living according to the values she instilled in us,” she said.

An Emotional Farewell

The service of songs brought together family, friends, and fellow artists to celebrate Omije Ojumi’s life and legacy.

Attendees were moved by the heartfelt tribute, which showed the late singer’s dedication as both a parent and a gospel artist who touched many lives.
