Ngozi Nwosu reveals why she married her abusive husband

Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu has opened up about her troubled marriage, sharing why she went ahead with the union despite suffering violence from her late husband even before their wedding.

Speaking in a candid conversation with actress Ayo Adesanya, Nwosu said she had once made up her mind to call off the marriage but was persuaded by her elder sister to go through with it.

According to her, her sister encouraged her to “be patient,” assuring her that the man would change once they got married.

Nwosu explained that she began noticing acts of aggression during their courtship and that those early experiences almost made her walk away from the relationship completely.

“He broke the kitchen door and dragged me by the hair” — Nwosu recalls shocking moment

The actress narrated how one violent incident left her bleeding and shaken.

“I went to the kitchen to boil water and he suddenly broke down the door,” she said. “He pulled me by my hair so hard that I started bleeding. I don’t even know where I got the strength from that day. I picked up a pestle, ready to fight back. My neighbours saw me naked.”

Nwosu added that she refused to sign the marriage register initially but eventually gave in to pressure from family members.

“I don’t believe marriage should be a do-or-die affair. Once a man beats you, be ready to keep taking it. It won’t stop,” she warned.

“Marriage isn’t endurance — walk away if it’s violent,” actress advises women

Reflecting on her experience, Nwosu urged women to leave any relationship marked by violence, saying it is better to be alone than to stay in constant fear.

“If you see violence before the wedding, it won’t stop after,” she said. “Don’t wait for him to change. Walk away before it becomes too late.”

The actress said she now speaks openly about her ordeal to help other women recognise the danger signs early and prioritise their safety above societal pressure.
