Howard Stern Reacts to Jerry Seinfeld’s Diss and Apology
In a recent episode of The Howard Stern Show, Howard Stern addressed the comments made by Jerry Seinfeld on the Fly on the Wall podcast, where Seinfeld suggested that Stern had been “outflanked” by comedians with podcasts. Seinfeld’s remarks implied that while Stern is a great interviewer, his comedic talents have been surpassed by others in the industry.
Stern, known for his candidness, shared his initial reaction to Seinfeld’s comments. “I read it, and I went, ‘Oh, that’s weird,’ because Jerry is a personal friend of ours,” Stern said, noting the close relationship between their wives, Jessica Seinfeld and Beth Stern. Stern speculated that Seinfeld might have been having a tough week, possibly alluding to the negative reception of Seinfeld’s recent project, Unfrosted.
Seinfeld quickly reached out to Stern to apologize for his remarks. Stern recounted the conversation on his show, explaining that Seinfeld was deeply regretful. “Jerry called me immediately and was like, ‘Oh, f—, I f—ed up, and I want to apologize,’” Stern said. Despite Seinfeld’s insistence on making a public apology on Stern’s show, Stern declined, finding the situation awkward but ultimately not a big deal. “I said, ‘Not necessary, I don’t wanna get into it. It’s awkward, it’s fine,’” Stern recalled.
Seinfeld also issued a public apology, clarifying his intent. “I meant to say he must feel surrounded, but I said ‘outflanked’ which sounded terrible and insulting,” Seinfeld explained. He emphasized that his comments were not meant to undermine Stern’s success and expressed his continued admiration for Stern.
Stern, reflecting on the incident, acknowledged that he too has had moments where he regretted his on-air comments. “I’ve had to apologize to you for s— I’ve said,” Stern told Seinfeld, highlighting the mutual understanding between the two. Stern accepted the apology graciously, stating, “Apology accepted, I don’t care, and you know what? If I’m not a comedian, I’m an interviewer, I don’t know what I am”.
